Quick Guide to Applying for Financial Aid

The process for applying for the 2025-2026 FAFSA is similar to previous years. It is essential to stay informed as updates or changes will likely come. Since some financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, it's best to apply as early as possible to secure more aid opportunities.

Steps to Apply for the 2025-2026 FAFSA

1. Create or Log into Your FSA ID

If you don't already have an FSA ID (Federal Student Aid ID), you can create one at studentaid.gov. This ID will be used to access and electronically sign your FAFSA.

2. Complete the FAFSA Form

Access the FAFSA for the 2025-2026 academic year. You can save and return to your FAFSA application at another time if you need time to gather documents or find additional information.

3. Enter Required Information

Provide personal details such as your name, date of birth, and Social Security number. Dependent students should also provide their parents' information.

4. Sign and Submit

Submit your FAFSA form online electronically. You will receive a confirmation once it’s successfully submitted.

Documents Needed to Complete the FAFSA for 2025-2026:

1. Your Social Security Number (SSN).

2. Your Parents' Social Security Numbers (if you are a dependent student).

3. Your 2023 Federal Income Tax Returns (or your parents' 2023 tax returns if dependent). The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) can import tax data directly into FAFSA.

4. W-2 Forms or records of income earned in 2023.

5. Records of untaxed income such as child support, veteran benefits, etc.

6. Bank statements and records of savings, investments, and assets for both you and your parents.

7. Your Alien Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen).

8. Your FSA ID (to sign electronically).

When Should You Apply for FAFSA for 2025-2026?

1. FAFSA Opening Date: The FAFSA for the 2025-2026 academic year is expected to open in December 2024. Please note that this date may be delayed.

2. Priority Deadlines: Many schools and states have priority deadlines for financial aid as early as February or March 2025, so it’s best to submit your FAFSA as soon as possible after it opens.

3. Federal Deadline: The federal deadline for submitting the FAFSA is typically June 30, 2026, but applying much earlier is advisable to maximize your aid options.
